That sounds like some kind of electrical interlock problem. The shifter has solenoids to lock things down and unlock them, and it has an encoder to report what gear you're in. Not sure how much of a mechanical connection there is on the 2015's though.

As such, I have placed the camera to the left of the plastic cover just enough to get that annoying cover out of view, with the bulk of the dashcam hidden behind the rear view mirror..
